Jewelry Care
Caring for Your Gemstones and Jewelry
- Try to protect any jewelry from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures and sunlight. Sunlight may fade gemstones and tarnish sterling silver.
- Store your jewelry in plastic bags with an interlocking seal to protect sterling silver from air and sunlight. It will be less prone to tarnish.
- Put your jewelry on after washing and applying any makeup and/or hair spray.
- Store jewelry separately or wrapped individually so it doesn’t scratch other jewelry.
- Never wear jewelry while swimming in a swimming pool. The chlorine can cause damage to various gemstones and gold. Gemstones may become loose in their settings.
- Avoid storing your jewelry next to a heating vent, windowsill or on a car dashboard.
Cleaning Sterling Silver and Gold-Filled Components
- Polish sterling silver by rubbing or buffing it with a soft polishing cloth. If used regularly, a polishing cloth can keep tarnish from building up. If you wear your sterling pieces regularly, your body oils help reduce tarnishing.
- You can also clean sterling silver jewelry with a mild soap and water solution, allowing the water to bead up, and then patting dry with a soft cloth.
- Never use silver cleaners on pearls or semi-precious stones as the stone may lose its luster.
- Do not rub silver with anything other than a polishing cloth or a fine piece of felt. Tissue paper or paper towels can cause scratches because of the fibers in these products.
What is Gold-Filled vs. Gold-Plated?
- Gold fill is made up of 1/20th 14kt gold to equal 3% actual gold in a gold-filled piece. A layer of 14kt gold is put over brass by heat and pressure bonding. Gold-filled has an actual layer of gold, while gold-plated merely has a microscopic film, which rubs off.
- Gold fill is considered a precious metal and wears just like solid 14kt gold. It will not rub off.
- Gold-filled may darken over time, but will polish up to a sparkling shine with a soft polishing cloth.
- Store in zip lock baggies to keep the shine longer
